P | P4 | EX2: Artificial Light

Capture ‘the beauty of artificial light’ in a short sequence of shots (‘beauty’ is, of course, a subjective term). The correct white balance setting will be important; this can get tricky - but interesting - if there are mixed light sources of different colour temperatures in the same shot. You can shoot indoors or outside and the light can be ambient or handheld flash.

Add the sequence to your learning log. In your notes try to describe the difference in the quality of light from the daylight shots in Exercise 4.1.

I started by taking some more SkillShare courses and researching the photographers mentioned.

I wanted to know what the movie 'In the Mood for Love' was about, and what was special about it, so I googled it and found this interesting video:

An interview with Christopher Doyle:

I wanted to have a closer look at some shots from the film to see how light is falling onto the actors and actresses faces.

Seem like a lot of it is lamps which are from above, front, side, or side and above on a diagonal.

I love Tokyo at night, it reminds me of all the wonderful photos I took in Japan on film, using only the night lights as they are so bright.

As I really like Frederik Trovatten I checked another video of his about night photography

Another interesting video I checked was

After having a bit of a research I wanted to go out and see what I can capture with artificial light. I went to our local pub which is a beautiful old town hall which was rebuilt and renovated into a really cool vintage looking pub. I had so much fun shooting as there was so much to play around with.

I took about 100 photos, but since a lot of them were similar I chose 27 images to make a contact sheet from and to choose from

I also found a better way of making a contact sheet using Photoshop!

There were a few interesting photos I really liked looking at - to see how the artificial light falls on things.

a strong light under the car looked very crisp and clear. Even though I had my ISO very high it didn't bring a lot of grain or noise.

ISO 3200 | 15-45@40mm | f7.1 | 1/30s

Looking at how artificial light also reflects on uneven glass or glass in general.

ISO 1600 | 15-45@22mm | f7.1 | 1/30s

How artificial light falls on wood, I definatly love more the warm artificial light, giving the lighting a romantic nostalgic tone.

ISO 1600 | 15-45@28mm | f11 | 1/100s

Very low light and high ISO giving the photos a film like look, because of the grain.

However I really liked how easy is not to smooth this grain on photoshop camera raw.
